Thank You COVID-19
Saying “thank you” appears to be an almost dying expression today. From practically every quarter, words like ungrateful, unmannerly, unappreciative, unthankful are some of the many expressions used to describe individuals who neglect to say “thank you” when favourable things are done to or for them.
Today, however, I am saying “thank you” to one of the world’s most significant enemies of modern times – COVID-19. You may ask me what is there about this ruthless killer who so far has sent over 430,000 innocent people to their grave and still have many more on its hit list that I am expressing thanks?
Lest you conjure up negative thoughts in your mind, I am not saying thanks to COVID-19 for taking the lives of innocent people. I am not applauding all the unwarranted attacks it continues to have on the extensive list of our caring Frontline workers, economies, and families.
I am, however, saying thanks to COVID-19 for the positives that continue to emerge within almost every stratum of society to the embarrassment of the disease. The coronavirus came on the scene as a destructive force to completely decimate humanity and all the positive accomplishments accumulated over the years. This disease, the worst of its kind since world war 2, never thought that insightful humanity would have recognized its blind spot and, within a quick time, admirably and assertively rise to counter its attacks with developmental purposes in mind. I can only touch on two of such progressive steps today. I shall look at some others subsequently.
Social
COVID-19, you thought by shutting down the workplaces, sending home family members and forcing curfew where people had to stay within their houses for long hours, that nothing positive would have been the outcome. You were mistaken. I want to report that what you meant for evil turned out for good in many households. More than one husband told me that the relationship with their wives got richer since they were working from home. A business executive, wife and mother mentioned that being home with family and enjoying their company, has been an incredibly enriching experience for all of them. An adolescent boy remarked that bonding with his dad was extraordinary.
COVID-19, the caring, compassionate, tender, benevolent, empathetic side of us as human beings continue to defy your brutality, bringing a fresh breeze of genuine love into the social atmosphere of friends and foes alike. More durable homes and healthier relationships are emerging. Thank you, COVID-19.
Mentally
COVID-19, your aim of curtailing and shutting down the creativity of humankind has not been working. People told me while at home, they were able to process some areas of interest they could not think through before being confined to their houses. They came up with some creative ways of doing things that they never thought were possible, much of which had the capability of adding much currency to their lives.
Others spoke of their learning to cook, developing a love for their gardens, becoming better at the computer, starting up new businesses, and learning new online courses.
I have encountered those in business who have developed alternative ways of planning and communicating. As a result, they see phenomenal results without having to drive to a location or take a flight to go to another country to conduct business.
Innovative, cutting-edge, groundbreaking creative ways of doing things are now budding forth with the potential for a new optimistic shift in how mankind does things. Thank you, COVID-19.
COVID-19, we will never give you that power to destroy our way of life as social beings; we will fight you to win back our social links which are so crucial for our well-being. We will never surrender to your vicious way of seeking to paralyze our minds, where we cannot use creative ways of accomplishing incredible things.
But thank you, COVID-19, for squeezing the best out of us. With God’s help, wisdom and knowledge, we shall continue to win over you.
