Summoning a Power Greater than COVID-19
Reputable scientists inform me that the coronavirus is so small that we cannot view it with the naked eye or an ordinary light microscope. To assess this “invisible” modern-day mass murderer that has sent over 170,000 individuals to their grave, an electron microscope containing high magnification and resolution has to be used. Covid–19 with a venomous appetite for terminating the aged, continues to drive fear into the hearts of millions. It is demanding respect from the haves and have-nots; placing multitudes under house arrest; and stripping pride away from the boastful hearts of various leaders from various corners of planet earth. Like a run-a-way train with no driver possessing common sense at its wheel, this infectious disease continues to plough away carelessly at the innocent, while mystifying the medical and related experts how to first stop its madness and then apply reverse gear.
One of the many things that have caught my attention since the pandemic surfaced however, are the many individuals, including political leaders throughout the world either calling for, or themselves using the medium of prayer to petition the unseen God to intervene in this crisis.
Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro said on the radio station Jovem Pan: “With the pastors and religious leaders we will call for a day of fasting by Brazilians (on April 05, 2020), so that Brazil can free itself from this evil as soon as possible.”
Here is a part of a model prayer that has been circulating worldwide to which many may say “Amen”.
“Jesus Christ [God], you traveled through towns and villages “curing every disease and illness.” At your command, the sick were made well. Come to our aid now, in the midst of the global spread of the coronavirus, that we may experience your healing love...”
It is my observation that people are realizing there is a true and living God who is immortal, invisible, all-wise, all-knowing, all-powerful who answers prayer and performs miracles. By acknowledging His sovereignty and consulting with Him, they believe He has the power to either stop the virus in its tracts immediately, or give the scientists added knowledge and wisdom, and over time, to come up with a cure.
Praying to God, however, does not remove mankind’s responsibility to act wisely by following the protocols outlined by those placed in a position to advise us on the best known human protection methods aimed at safeguarding our lives. Faith minus common sense does not produce life.
It would be a mistake for me to conclude this article without saluting the long list of health care and other essential workers within the wide network of personnel the world over, who continue to unselfishly and untiringly give themselves to confronting this virus. May God protect them and reward them greatly for their untiring service to humanity.
Barbados’ Prime minister, Mia, Amor Mottley’s must be applauded for her astute leadership and decisive action in setting up a remarkable, knowledgeable management team in anticipation of the virus flying into the Caribbean. On April 17, she came in for high praise from World Health Organisation Director General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus who said: “I would like to use this opportunity to appreciate the strong leadership of the Prime Minister of Barbados steering the response in the Caribbean.”
I observed that at the end of every major address to our nation, Barbados, she would always quote from our National Anthem, in acknowledgement of the living Supreme God:
“The Lord has been the people's guide
For past three hundred years
With him still on the people's side
We have no doubts or fears …”
I know that throughout Barbados, church leaders along with their congregations, have also been doing a phenomenal job in praying day and night for God’s intervention.
In my article on April 09, 2020, I said it may that “God desires to use Barbados as a model country through which he can challenge other nations in the way we do things as we rely on His wisdom, knowledge, and understanding.” God is more powerful than COVID-19.
